Nothing will turn you patriotic like a child entering the military. Sure, I’ve always loved America, her freedom, and history. The Star Spangled Banner? Always adored it and the feeling of pride it brings. But when your kid enters boot camp after living at home their whole life, ready to serve the country and go where told, you embark on a whole new journey of what it means to be proud to be an American. You learn about the branch of the military, it’s specialties, and missions. You wear the gear and brag shamelessly to friends and family. And hardest of all, you learn to let go.
How does this translate into jewelry? I have year-round pieces that are simple ways to show support and American pride. Red, white, and blue never go out of style.
I know I’m just one of many moms on this hard but wonderful path.

Spangled, meaning decorated, and Sparrow, a bird that reminds us that we are all looked after by God, every detail and every hair known. Spangled lends a patriotic connotation, and since we have one child in the military, and my husband, as well as many other close family members who have served, I want to honor that in my work.
The Spangled Sparrow is a handmade jewelry and gift shop, primarily operating online, but with the capability to sell locally as well. Operating in my studio at home, I have the ability to adjust my schedule as needed, and the creative outlet is welcomed. I began with making leather earrings and expanded to the personalization of those. I added bracelets, both leather and beaded, with personalization optional. Decals, monogrammed as well as organizational, can be personalized for customers. Fun sayings and images are available to add to your favorite mug, laptop, or even your vehicle window. Family is key, and some of my jewelry items are inspired by certain members. I incorporate leather in some aspect in most of my pieces, a direct nod to my husband. He has long worked with this material, and is as tried and true as this great classic. You’ll find happy, brightly colored jewelry inspired by my mother, her beach cottage, and her open invitation for a visit. Patriotism is reflected in items year round, since that is how often I am proud of my military-serving child and the U.S.A.
Most importantly, you'll find items of faith, adorned with crosses or anchoring words such as “hope, peace, and faith”. These have been inspired by my brother, who years ago shared the Good News and in doing so, changed my entire household’s path in life and eternity.
Be sure to visit the section in my shop tagged “Papillon” (French for butterfly). It features jewelry inspired by my niece, Monique, who left this world too soon. Her legacy continues through a scholarship foundation created in her name and started by a former professor. All profit from purchases made in the Papillon collection will go directly to this fund, which is awarded to future educators for tuition costs. These pieces reflect aspects of her personality; her love of children, animals, and they feature her favorite colors. This collection will grow, as well as vary in its offerings. I hope you will proudly wear these pieces with a purpose.
